Recognized across the Commonwealth since 1986, the Southeastern Massachusetts Arts Collaborative, better known as SMARTS, is a year round non-profit organization dedicated to the arts and creativity. This dynamic multifaceted arts organization provides people of all ages with discipline-based and interdisciplinary training, education and performance experiences.

Celebrating its 25th year, SMARTS Summer Institute, the flagship program of the Southeastern Massachusetts Arts Collaborative, offers young people a unique opportunity to work with some of New England’s finest artists. Open to children
ages 5-18, the SMARTS Summer Institute is about ideas, innovative and dynamic thinking and collaborations. Children explore and learn through process and play in creative writing, dance, drama, film/video, music, vocal and visual arts in a camp environment.  SMARTS is the only opportunity in southeastern Massachusetts for arts interested young people to be exposed to so many arts, taught by so many different artists/teachers, all under the same roof.

To further reach our goals, SMARTS provides professional development for classroom teachers, arts teachers, administrators, parents and community members through partnerships with artists in schools, training in the arts, and arts education workshops and seminars. We support internship opportunities, networking for artists, professional development for teachers and administrators, partnerships and alliances with local, regional, and state education and cultural institutions and arts organizations, and strong advocacy for arts education in our schools.

To this day SMARTS operates under the aegis of the following convictions:

  • Education in the arts and the development of creativity is a right and a need of all children
  • Considerations of minority status or financial limitation will not preclude participation of any person
  • Collaboration among artists, teachers and agencies serves to elevate and make relevant the arts experiences of young people
  • Emphasizing process over product ensures the development of skills and confidence that will carry into all aspects of life
  • Young people will have access to art enrichment opportunities locally
