The Southeastern Massachusetts Arts Collaborative, better known as SMARTS, is a community-based multi-arts organization whose mission is to augment and enhance arts programming in the public schools and community, thereby providing all young people of southeastern Massachusetts access to quality workshops, projects, programs and performance opportunities.
To further reach our goals, we provide professional development for classroom teachers, arts teachers, administrators, parents and community members through partnerships with artists in schools, training in the arts, and arts education workshops and seminars. We support internship opportunities, networking for artists, professional development for teachers and administrators, partnerships and alliances with local, regional, and state education and cultural institutions and arts organizations, and strong advocacy for arts education in our schools.
Since its founding in 1986, SMARTS continues to operate under the aegis of the following convictions: that education in the arts and the development of creativity is a right and need of all children; that considerations of "minority" status of any kind, or of financial limitation, should not preclude participation of any young person; that all possible collaboration and sharing among teachers, agencies and professional artists of the region can serve to elevate and make more relevant the arts experiences of young people; and that young people should have access to art enrichment opportunities locally.

SMARTS is funded in part by grants from
The Massachusetts Cultural Council
and the Attleboro, Easton, Dighton, Mansfield & Rehoboth Cultural Councils,
local agencies which are
supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
